In the Words of the Sanghāta:
The Blessed One said, “Look at this group of beings.”

They said, “Blessed One, we see them.”

The Blessed One said, “This group of beings was born for the sake of your happiness.”

They said, “Will these sentient beings die, too?”

The Blessed One said: “Friends, that is so. All sentient beings will die.”

Report a Sanghāta Sūtra Recitation or Other Activity

We are collecting locations that Sanghāta-related activities took place in order to mark a satellite map of the earth to show the exact spots of recitation, copying, oral transmission or any other major way that the Sanghāta has been made present on that spot.

How to report

In order for us to determine the precise latitude and longitude of your location, please send as much of the following information as you can:

  • Location (with postal code and exact street address, if at all possible)
  • Description of activity (ie was it on October 17? individual recitation, group recitation, copying)
  • Description of location (ie private house, name of dharma center)
  • Language recited in, if not English
  • How many people (or best estimate)
  • Date (or best estimate)
  • Are you willing to have your name included as having recited on that spot?
Your name (optional):

Your email address:

Why report activities?

As it says in the Sanghāta, wherever the Sanghāta has been present, the Buddha is now present:

For whoever wishes to see a Buddha,
The Sanghata is equivalent to a Buddha.
Wherever the Sanghata is,
There the Buddha is, always...

Therefore, the Global Sanghāta Satellite Map of the world not only shows where the Sanghāta has been made present—it also marks the places on our planet where the Buddha has been made continually manifest.

If you wish, you can view the Global Sanghata Satellite Map now.

Why we ask for street addresses and what we do with them

With the street address you provide, we look up the latitude and longitude for that location, and mark the exact spot that the recitation took place. That will allow us to mark more than one spot per city or town. Without a street address, we will only ever be able to place one tag per city or town. We will not keep or display records of actual street addresses, ever. If you have the longitudinal coordinates of the location, you can just send those along and we can use them instead to input your location. (If you have a GPS system, for example, in your car, you can simply provide us with the coordinates from that, or you can look up longitudinal coordinate at www.maporama.com, which displays coordinates on the lower left side of the map page.) We will only ever use the street address to generate the longitudinal coordinates to mark the satellite map, and discard them afterwards.

Incidentally, those who report recitations will then be able to view a satellite image of the area they recited in.

To see an example of what the exact address makes possible, take a look at a map of the first place that the Sanghāta Sūtra was ever recited in English, by clicking here. This map shows the stupa at Deer Park Buddhist Center in Madison, Wisconsin, and you can just make out the circumambulation path around the stupa from the satellite image. The other Deer Park buildings are also clearly visible. (You can use the bar at the left of the map to zoom in or out.)
