Venerable Ananda said to the Buddha,
"Venerable Sir, good friendship, good companionship, and good
comradeship is half of the holy life."
The Buddha said to Venerable Ananda, "Not so, Ananda! Not so, Ananda!
good friendship, good companionship, and good comradeship is the entire
holy life. When a bhikkhu or a monk has a good friend, a good
companion, or a good comrade, it is to be expected that he will develop
and cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path."
- Upaddha Sutta
In the Words of the Sanghata:
The Blessed One spoke:
Those who have faith and ethics in abundance,
possess wisdom and great austerity,
and associate with virtuous friends —
these will swiftly become a tathágata.
[and elsewhere]
"When one sees a virtuous friend, a tathágata is seen. When
one
sees a tathágata, all one’s wickedness is
purified."
- Arya Sanghata Sutra
Join the Endless Recitation
NOTE: Sanghata recitation server temporarily disabled. The
server that had hosted the endless recitation of the Sanghata has been
taken down by the organization that had been supporting it (the FPMT),
while they design and develop a replacment service. As there is no
estimate yet as to how long this might take, we are exploring ways to
shift the hosting of this service to the sanghatsutra.net servers.
Updated information - and hopefully a new link - will be posted here as
soon as it is available...

The Dharma taught by buddhas is endless, and now so is the recitation
of that Dharma! You can now join to recite with others around the
globe, at any time, through the Endless Recitation Server. The Sanghata
is
scrolling all the time, day and night, so you can just join in wherever
and recite for as long as you like. Think of it as a virtual Dharma
center, where a recitation is always in progress. You can just join in
at the point
the recitation has reached, and are of course welcome to recite as
little or as much as you are able. You will also be able to see how
many others are online reciting with you at that
moment. (If others join after you do, the number does not update right away; to see
whether more have joined you, you can hit 'refresh' on your browser.) A display below the text
will indicate where you are in
the sutra.
The scrolling speed has several
settings, so please do let us know if
it seems too slow, too fast, or
just right, and if a consensus emerges, we will adjust the
speed
accordingly. Note
that as of July 10, 2007, the responses have been evenly split between people
wanting it to scroll faster and those wanting it slower, so we are
waiting for enough requests on one side or the other before making
changes.
This custom application is still under testing, so bear with it. You
will need to download Java
RTE Version 5.0 Update 9 if
it is not already
installed on your
computer. On occasion, it may be necessary to close your browser
entirely and then re-open to get the server to load. But it does work,
so don't give up!
Warm thanks to Darren
Littlejohn and Tysa for conceiving and to Darren and Ken for
creating
this endless recitation.
